What we are asking from the UK government

We welcome the constructive role taken by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown in March 2009 acknowledging that we are facing a "decisive moment" and stating the UK's intention to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. We call on the UK Government use the 2010 Review Conference to press for agreement on the necessary practical steps advance this aim.

Specifically we call for the UK government to support: -

  • commitments from all states to negotiate a nuclear weapons convention that would make the possession of nuclear weapons illegal
  • a new treaty to ensure that all fissile material is brought under international control and for substantial progress towards this goal

In addition to pressing for the achievement of the above we ask the UK government to: -

  • declare a policy of no first use in order to further delegitimize the utility of nuclear weapons in the post-Cold War era
  • outline how the UK nuclear arsenal might be placed within the broader negotiations on disarmament
